So, the last thing I wanted to do in 2023, was to start a new business, but there was a yearning in me to do something that embraced who I was, who I am, and who I continue to be; to bring awareness to the Chinese Community abroad.
If you want to know about myself, please read the About section about me.
Now that you know a little about me, I never really intended to start a business. But seeing all the news feed articles on Vancouver Chinatown, I didn't really think it would affect me, but it did. I knew who I was and I was proud to be a Chinese Canadian, so I thought "How can I help to bring pride to the Chinese Community?"
Then it hit me, people needed to know where we were, who we are and the stories and issues that are affecting the Vancouver Chinatown's community.
So I started this website to bring pride and recognition into representing Vancouver's Chinatown. Now being first generation Chinese, barely speaking any Chinese (but 100% Chinese genetically), I didn't know the nuances of the culture of the language, I knew about the politics of China persay regarding Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc. So when I started creating the logos and designs, I selected the "Simplified Chinese instead of the Traditional Chinese," not knowing any difference.
But since then it has been brought to my attention by a new colleague; Lincoln Ho of @yegventures. He has educated me in the nuances of why there were two types of Chinese language.
Vancouver Chinatown was established distinctly by Cantonese who wrote Traditional Chinese. Most establishments in the lower mainland use Traditional Chinese and it can be a point of contention in casual conversation. Apparently, the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) has been pushing to cancel Cantonese over the next generations in an effort to remove history, heritage, and culture, and it doesn't want to wait until July 1, 2047 (the expiry date on which Hong Kong remains autonomous). If you did not know about this like I didn't, please check out this LINK regarding this.
So now that I know this information; moving forward, I will be making my products with Traditional Chinese font.
I did not know the nuances of the language and I don't mean to offend anyone, and if I did, please accept my apologies.
